Keeping Your Lawn Green

Following one of the warmest winters on record, gardens and gardeners alike have been thrown into turmoil. Across the nation grass is growing at a rate of knots, meaning that lawn-mowers are being dragged out of hibernation earlier than ever before.

Looking after your lawn can seem like a daunting task at the best of times; and more so now that the traditional gardening goal-posts that we all grew up with seem to be in a constant state of flux. Even slight changes in temperature and rainfall will have repercussions on your turf, but luckily a little know-how goes a long way... Just follow our tips below, and you'll soon have a lush, green lawn that'll be the envy of the neighbourhood.

One man went to mow...

Your lawn will benefit from regular cutting, as this will stimulate the growth of shoots at the base of the plant, helping it to thicken and strengthen. Cut to an optimum height of around 15mm, and for best results make sure you have the blades of your mower sharpened at least once a year.

Whilst mowing is essential for healthy grass, the process itself will strip your lawn of vital nutrients, which will then need to be replaced. Try using a product that's specific to the job, such as Evergreen "I Want To Feed My Lawn After Cutting" (RSP GBP6.99 / 100m2) which can be applied directly after cutting. There's no need to water it in and you'll benefit from a visibly greener lawn in just three days - and, best of all, it continues to feed for up to six weeks, so the results will last.

The need to weed...

Weeds don't just look unsightly; they also harm your lawn's health as they compete for water and nutrients. If you're lucky enough not to have any weeds then keep feeding and keep mowing as a thick, green lawn is better equipped to fight off an invasion. Alternatively, if like most people your grass is dotted with the odd dandelion, then you need Evergreen 'Feed & Weed Your Lawn'(1) (RSP GBP6.99/100m2), which as the name suggests feeds and weeds at the same time. It also provides visibly greener grass in just seven days.

Moss-loss

Moss is a common bugbear, whether you're a keen gardener or just someone who likes to maintain a good-looking lawn for the family to enjoy. If your garden is affected, then apply Evergreen "I Want Complete Lawn Care" (2) (RSP GBP7.49/100m2) in the Spring and the moss will turn brown and die within a week. Once this has happened, rake out the debris and dispose of it. In addition, Evergreen "I Want Complete Lawn Care" combats other weeds such as daisies and white clover, and it feeds the grass at the same time - so you can look forward to a thicker, greener lawn in just 7 days.

Once you've given your lawn a good cut and feed, and dealt with any problem areas, upkeep shouldn't be a problem. Even if we have another scorching summer this year, all this preparation will see your lawn well placed to survive the season.

Evergreen is the Registered Trade Mark of The Scotts Miracle-Gro Company or its affiliates.
